Apply to Join BlueSci – Deadline 20 January!

2014 will be an exciting year for BlueSci – in Michaelmas it will be 10 years since the publication of our first issue, a milestone we hope to celebrate with a number of special events, and we want you to be involved!

Our new committee will be elected at the end of January and we have a number of positions available. Officers are usually in position for 12 months, although this is not mandatory. In addition, we are also advertising for an Issue Editor to be involved in the production of our Easter Issue.

Issue Editor

The issue editor is only involved in the production of one issue of BlueSci (Issue 30), they are responsible for selecting and commissioning articles and thus control the creative vision of the issue. They work closely with the Managing Editor to co-ordinate bringing this all together and ensure that everything meets its deadlines. It’s fantastic experience in team management and organisation, and is particularly appealing for those who are only in Cambridge for a short time. No prior experience is required; we are primarily interested in creativity and enthusiasm. President

The President oversees all aspects of BlueSci and keeps everything running as smoothly as possible. As President you need to be up to date with everything going on in the society and must work closely with all other committee members to provide support and advice. Due to the nature of the role, previous experience with BlueSci, or experience in running a society is necessary. If you’re interested in the role send 200-300 words to president@bluesci.co.uk by January 20th, detailing any previous involvement with BlueSci and highlighting your suitability for the position.

Junior Treasurer

The Treasurer is responsible for maintaining BlueSci’s finances and must ensure all money is accounted for and that the societies financial records are in good order.  No previous experience is necessary, however enthusiasm and good organizational skills are preferred. If you’re interested in the role send 200-300 words to president@bluesci.co.uk by January 20th, detailing any previous involvement with BlueSci and highlighting your suitability for the role.

Advertising Officer

BlueSci relies on the generation of advertising revenue to cover publication costs. It is the role of the advertising officer to manage and develop advertising opportunities, both within the University and Industry, in order to raise funds for the society. Prior experience of fundraising would be beneficial, but is not essential. If you’re interested in the role send 200-300 words to president@bluesci.co.uk by January 20th, outlining any previous experience and ideas of how you would generate support for BlueSci.

Events and Publicity Officer

The Events Officer is responsible for the profile of BlueSci within the University and beyond, helping to organise and publicise BlueSci events. This includes finding possible speakers for BlueSci Talks, organising events to attract new members to BlueSci, and working with the Web editor to advertise these events. The Events Officer should also work closely with the Issue Editors, Film Managers and Radio Presenters to promote the many different BlueSci outlets. Some prior experience of organising events is preferred but not essential, what is most important is enthusiasm and imagination. If you’re interested in the role send 200-300 words to president@bluesci.co.uk by January 20th, outlining any previous experience and ideas of how you would help to promote BlueSci.

Web Editor

The Web Editor is responsible for maintaining the societies website, Facebook page and Twitter feed. This includes providing and uploading content, editing articles and publicising events on the website, Facebook and Twitter. The Web Editor works with closely with the Events Officer, News Editor and Issue Editor to promote the society. If you’re interested in the role send 200-300 words to president@bluesci.co.uk by January 20th, outlining any previous experience and any ideas you may have for the website.

Film Editors

BlueSci Film produces films explaining new discoveries and advances in science as well as performing video interviews with some of Cambridge’s brightest and best in scientific research and communication. We are looking for new Film Editors to commission, undertake and edit film projects. If you’re interested in being involved with filmmaking on either side of the camera or in the editing room we want to hear from you. Experience in filming or film editing is preferred, but not essential. If you’re interested in the role send 200-300 words to president@bluesci.co.uk by January 20th, outlining any previous experience.
